Course content
Lectures: 1-2. Western honey bee and its classification in the zoological system. Other pollinators and their role in the ecosystemHistory of beekeeping, beekeeping in the Czech Republic. The importance of beekeeping. 3-4 Anatomy and physiology of honeybees, biology of bee colony. Bee nutrition. 5-6. Legislation related to bees and bee products. Selection of apiary location, selection of the suitable hive. Principles of safe handling of bees. 7-8. Characteristics of individual periods of beekeeping year, basics of beekeeping zootechnics I. 9-10. Characteristics of individual periods of beekeeping year, basics of beekeeping zootechnics I. Basics of genetics and breeding. 11-12. Diseases and pests of bees. 13-14. Characteristics of bee products. Formation, harvest, processing and use. Practical exercises: 1-4. Block 1. Beekeeping zootechnics I. Preparation of beekeeping equipment, hives, frames. Inspection of bee colonies, expanding space in the bee colonies. 5-9. Block 2. Beekeeping zootechnics II. Making of nucleus colonies. Basics of Queen Rearing. Requeening. Methods of harvesting and processing bee products. Methods of feeding bee colonies. Methods of disease prevention and control. 10-14. Block 3. Honey harvest. Consultations, awarding credits.

Learning outcomes
The main aim is to acquaint the students with the essentials of apiculture including the management of bee colonies and the basics of prevention and control of bee diseases. An additional goal is to bring knowledge about the most widely used bee products and the process of their production, harvesting, processing and use.
1) Theoretical knowledge The student is able: ? to describe the impact of western honey bees and apiculture in the Czech Republic and the world, ? to describe honey bee morphology and physiology as well as the biology of a bee colony as a superorganism, ? to understand basic principles of management of bee colonies and describe necessary interventions performed throughout the beekeeping year, ? to describe the basic principles of breeding of bees and queen rearing, ? to describe preventive and therapeutic interventions performed in particular seasons of the beekeeping year, ? to describe natural sources for the production of bee products, and technology for harvesting, processing and storage of bee products. 2) Practical skills The student is able: ? to handle bees safely ? to perform hive inspection and assess colony fitness and health status. 3) Competences The student is able to based on the results of the hive inspection and assessment of its condition, the student is able to propose a suitable procedure for its further treatment.

Credit awarding conditions: - attendance of all practical trainings according to syllabus - participation in another exercise is possible only after prior agreement with teacher. Examinatination: - a condition for admission to the exam is obtaining a credit - theoretical knowledge is tested in the form of a test - the result of the exam is evaluated with a grade
