Course content
Lectures: 1. Western honey bee and its classification in zoological system. Other pollinators and their role in ecosystem. History of apiculture. Apiculture in the Czech Republic and in the world. 2. Honey bee morphology and physiology. Biology of bee colony. Honey bee nutrition. 3. Honey bee welfare. Choosing the apiary location, choosing of beehive type. Safe handling of bees. 4. Beekeeper´s year I. Theoretical fundamentals of management of bee colonies. 5. Beekeeper´s year II. Theoretical fundamentals of management of bee colonies. Breeding and genetic improvement of bees. 6. Prevention and control of bee diseases 7. Bee products - honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, bee venom. Production, harvesting, processing and use. Practical exercises: Block 1. Management of bee colonies I. Demonstration of beekeeping equipment, types of hives and their use. Examination of winter hive debris. Preparing the beekeeping equipment for spring buildup of colonies. First hive inspection, evaluation of colony fitness Block 2. Management of bee colonies II. Comprehensive hive inspection, adding honey supers. Swarming control. Splitting of colonies. Basics of queen rearing. Block 3. Management of bee colonies II. Demonstration of honey harvesting, processing and storage. Varroasis monitoring and control. Management of bee colonies in late summer. Feeding of bee colonies. Consultations, credits.

Learning outcomes
Aims: The main aim is to acquaint the students with the essentials of apiculture including management of bee colonies and basics of prevention and control of bee diseases. Additional goal is to acquaint the students with the most widely used bee products and with the process of their production, harvesting, processing and use.

Written exam

Requirements for student: Credit conditions: attendance at all practical exercises according to syllabus. Absences should be excused for a valid reason (in advance, if possible). Substitute participation on another exercise is possible after prior consultation with a teacher. Examination: knowledge is tested by a written test. Admission to the test is conditional to credit granting
