Course content
|
Lectures (2 hours every second week of the semester): 1. Non-commercial movements of pet animals 2. Animal welfare during transport 3. Animal welfare at the time of killing 4. Animal by-products 5. Hygiene package I - general principles of European food law, main food hygiene regulations 6. Hygiene package II - implementing regulations + Provision of food information to final consumers 7. Official controls + Animal health law Practical classes (2 hours every second week of the semester): 1. History, institutions and functioning of the European Union + Types of European legislative acts 2. Non-commercial movements of pet animals (solving of practical cases) 3. Animal welfare during transport (solving of practical cases) 4. Animal welfare at the time of killing (solving of practical cases) 5. Animal by-products (solving of practical cases) 6. Hygiene package I+II (solving of practical cases) 7. Provision of food information to final consumers (solving practical cases) + credit test

Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on European Union legislation for veterinary care and food hygiene found in veterinary and hygiene legislation and related regulations. The aim of this course is to teach the student how to use these regulations as an official veterinarian or a private veterinarian.
Theoretical knowledge The student: - understands the basic principles of the European Union, - knows EU legal regulations and basic rules for veterinary care, - understands the basic principles of certification, registration, and approval. Practical skills The student is able: - to work with legal regulations of the European Union and interpret the content of legal rules, - to assess practical situations related to veterinary care according to the applicable EU legislation and suggest the correct procedure for their solution, - to correctly fill in documents related to veterinary administration. Competences The student is able: - to understand the ethical and legal responsibilities of a veterinarian relating to the animals they care for, the environment, clients, politics and society, - to use their professional skills to contribute to the development of veterinary knowledge and the concept of "one health" in order to improve animal health and welfare, the quality of animal care and public health in veterinary practice, - to perform a food and feed inspection and an inspection of related food technology.
