Course content
Lectures: 1.Definitions and concepts in the field of animal welfare. Historical developmentof relationship between human and animal. Religion and animals. The needs and rights of animals. 2.Animal welfare and its definition, parameters of animal welfare. "5 Freedoms" and ways of assessing welfare. 3.ANI system and WELFARE QUALITY. Conciousness and animal suffering. Assessment of behavioural needs. Assessment of ANI system. 4.Main motivation forces of animals. Hunger, thirst and stereotypical behavior. Enrichment its types and goals. Comfort, cleanless and safety during animal resting. Animal needs for space. 5.Animal protection from suffering. Animal health the impact of diseases and pain on animal welfare. Livestock production, genetics, biotechnology and their impact on animal welfare. Conflicts between animals fear and stress. A need of social contact with animals of the same species. 6.Conventional and organic animal husbandry. Farms with higher level of animal welfare. The objectives of organic farming in terms of welfare. 7.Welfare and animal protection. Welfare and animal protection and national and European legislation. General welfare principles of animal farming. Welfare during transport and animal slaughtering. 8.Cattle welfare. Natural behaviour of cattle. Cattle diseases, breeding technology, reproduction and their impact on animal welfare. 9.Main indicators of welfare failures in individual categories of cattle. Preventing failures of cattle welfare. 10.Itroduction to the pig welfare. Pig farming concerning animal welfare. 11.Welfare of laying hens types of breeding technologies. Advantages and disadvantages. The fattening of broilers. The specifics of welfare in broilers. Practicals: 1.Introduction to the livestock welfare. Semestral work the assessment of the welfare level in selected farm. 2.Cattle welfare principles of animal handling (video). Minimal standards in cattle breeding model examples. 3.Pig welfare principles of animal handling (video). Minimal standards in pig breeding model examples. 4.Visit of livestock exhibition. 5.Welfare and livestock breeding technologies, housing, nutrition, diseases and their impact on animal welfare (two-days trip to the University farms in Nový Jičín). 10.Presentations of experience from animal exhibitions. 11.Welfare and breeding of sheep and goats - principles of animal handling (video). Minimal standards in sheep and goat breeding. 12.Welfare of slaughtered animals (video). 13.Poultry welfare - minimal standards in poultry breeding model examples. 14.Presentation of semestral work.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the Welfare of Livestock course is to introduce students to the content of the concept of welfare, indicators of animal welfare and methods of welfare assessment in breeding, transport and killing. Other topics covered are specific aspects and problems of animal welfare of each category of the main livestock species such as cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, poultry and waterfowl.

Requirements for the student's preparation during the course of study: Basic theoretical knowledge is required for the current seminar (from lectures and recommended materials), knowledge is tested during the seminar by the teacher. Credit requirements: (a) Completion of seminars during the semester. (b) preparation and presentation of the term presentation "Evaluation of the welfare level of livestock in a selected farm". Conditions for the examination: (a) obtaining credit. (b) practical knowledge of the discipline, as verified by passing a practical examination (c) theoretical knowledge of the discipline
