Lectures: 2024 1st Introduction. Constitution of animals - recognized types. Earliness and longevity of animals 2nd Biological basis of meat production - animal growth and development, allometry of the growth, fattening and carcass value of farmed food animals 3rd Basics of animal breeding - general principles of selective breeding and crossbreeding methods applied in farmed animals 4th Biological basis of milk production Cattle husbandry - development, basic biological characteristics, management practices used in dairy herds 5th Cattle husbandry - housing technologies used in reared cattle; management practices used in beef herds 6th Sheep and goat husbandry - development, basic biological characteristics, production characteristics, management practices and housing technologies applied in flocks 7th Pig husbandry - development, basic biological characteristics, performance, important swine breeds, principles of crossbreeding programs 8th Pig husbandry - management practices and housing technologies used for particular pig categories 9th Horse husbandry - development, basic biological characteristics, selective breeding and breeding management, sport and riding use of horses 10th Horse husbandry - management practices and housing systems used for raising foals and rearing horses 11th Poultry husbandry - development, basic biological characteristics of important farmed species, egg-laying yield 12th Poultry husbandry - management practices and housing technologies used in important farmed species of gallinaceous and water poultry 13th Meat-type rabbit husbandry - basic biological characteristics, management practices and housing technologies applied in breeding and fattening of broiler rabbits 14th Husbandry of dogs and cats - basic biological characteristics, organized breeding, breeding methods, important breeds. Tutorial prior to the exam Practical lessons: 1st Introduction. Training of students on safety and health protection at work. Zootechnical taxonomy - a breed and its lower taxonomy units. Phylogeny of important species of livestock animals and farmed poultry 2nd The conformation of animals I - general requirements for the animal exterior, functional traits. Evaluation of regions of head, neck and trunk in mammals 3rd The conformation of animals II - evaluation of limbs in mammals. Recognized colours and markings of horses for identification purposes 4th Identification of animals - methods of temporary and permanent identification; electronic identification using in animals 5th Cattle breeds - sorting, recognition of the most important world's breeds, their typical traits and performance Test no. 1 - checking of skills to recognize the colour of the horse and chosen exterior traits of animals 6th Sheep and goat breeds - sorting, recognition of the most important world's breeds, their typical traits and performance 7th Horse breeds - sorting, recognition of the most important world's breeds, their typical traits and performance 8th Poultry breeds - recognition of the most important world's breeds of domestic chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese; their performance. Important commercial poultry crosses (hybrids) 9th-11th Field lesson on the National stud farm in Tlumačov - management practices and housing of lincensed breeding stallions. 12th-13th Field trip to a farm - management practices and housing systems used for dairy and beef cattle and sheep. 14th Test no. 2 - checking of skills to recognize important breeds of livestock animals and farm poultry. Learning outcomes
The teaching focuses mainly on the explanation of the biological basis of meat, milk and eggs production. Particular attention is also paid to the field of farm animal breeding and as well as to the specification of management practices and housing technologies used in stocks of these animals. Practical classes focus on the explanation of the importance of substantial exterior traits assessment in animals, further on characterization and recognition of important breeds of farm animals and practical demonstration of important housing technologies applied in farms.
Theoretical knowledge The student can: - specify the basic biological characteristics of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, rabbits, important poultry species and dogs and cats, - define factors influencing meat, milk and egg production in important farmed animals, - describe general principles of selective breeding and crossing methods applied in important species of farm animals and describe principles of breeding management and programs within their organized breeding, - enumerate and characterize important breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, dogs and cats and also breeds and commercial crossbreds of poultry, - specify management practices and housing technology used for particular categories of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and poultry, and understands coherences between the housing technology and their production, reproduction, welfare and health. Practical skills The student can: - recognize important breeds of cattle, small ruminants, pigs, horses, poultry, dogs and cats, - determine a basic colour and markings used for identification of the horse, donkey and horse x donkey crosses, and also to identify an animal marked by an electronic microchip, - find out fertility and embryonal mortality of incubated poultry eggs, and to recognize a gender of hatched chicks of colour sexing types of domestic chickens, - assess the suitability of specific housing technology used for particular categories of cattle and pigs, and in these farm animals to point out potential hazards of housing in relation to their production, reproduction, welfare and health. Competences The student is able to: - identify the particular horse, donkey and horse x donkey crosses using verbal and graphic description, - assess independently the suitability of production system, housing technology and husbandry and nutrition management used for important breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and breeds and commercial crossbreds of poultry, - recommend independently solutions to the elimination of hazard elements and shortcomings of housing technology used for cattle and pigs in relation to physiological and behavioural needs, welfare and health of these farm animals, - work effectively as a member of a team and take part in self-audit.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Written credit test

Credit requirements: - active participation in practical classes - a maximum of 2 excused absences - compulsory attendance in the field practice - passing 2 sub-tests according to the syllabus (pass mark at least 70% for each test), with a maximum of 2 re-sits of the respective test in case of failure; both of the sub-tests have to be passed no later than 20 June Exam requirements: - participation in the exam is conditioned by awarding credit - the exam is in a written form - checking of student´s knowledge is performed by the combination of multiple-choice questions, open-ended questions expecting short answers created by a student, and a randomly picked question focused on a broad topic from the syllabus expecting an extensive answer created by a student - the final evaluation averages the results of the particular exam parts
