Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is for students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of soft tissue surgery in large animals - urogenital tract surgery, basic ophthalmologic methods, surgery of the upper airways, polytraumatic patient (stabilization, transport), regional anesthesia and dentistry.
competences The student is able to: - suggest a conservative or surgical treatment, if any, in the case of damage or disease of the horse's eyes, based on the taken anamnesis and results of the examination, - provide the referred patient with a veterinary report (history and history of treatment), - in lameness diagnostics, they will be able to perform basic diagnostics and determine the acuteness of the condition, or the need for examination at a specialized facility, - ensure safe transport of the patient in cooperation with carriers (e.g. a patient with tendon laceration), - in planned castration in field conditions, perform a basic preoperative medical examination, plan the procedure (choose the most appropriate type of surgery and anaesthesia) and educate the owner about the positives and negatives of individual techniques - assess patients with various types of injuries, perform their basic treatment and stabilization, or send the horses properly prepared to the facility to which they are being referred, i.e., sedation, analgesia, application.
Prerequisites
1) theoretical knowledge The student knows: - basic principles of soft tissue surgery in large animals, - basic orthopaedic diagnostics, - basic diagnostic methods in ophthalmology, - acute patient management, - basics of equine dentistry. 2) practical skills The student is able to: - perform an ophthalmologic examination of the horse including intraconjunctival and subconjunctival application of drugs, - sedate a horse and to suggest and maintain general intravenous anaesthesia, - classify wounds and to choose optimal treatment, - perform basic lameness diagnostics, - assess the dental condition in a horse, to determine the approximate age of the horse and perform a sharp tooth treatment.
