Course content
Lectures: Introduction to discipline, ruminants and their breeding in relationship to the healt problems, veterinary medicine in ruminants as farm animals (including herd health management) vs. in ruminants as companion animals. Diferential diagnosis of indigestion and low milk yield. Forestomach dysfunctions - disturbances of digestion based on nutritional failure (acute a chronic rumen acidosis, syndrom of low milk fet level, ruminal alcalosis, putrefaction of ruminal content, tympany). Forestomach dysfunctions - traumatic disturbances and disturbances of patency of gastrointestinal tract (traumatic reticuloperitonitis, obturation of oesophagus and reticulo-omasal opening, obstipation of omasum, Hoflund´s syndrome). Displaced abomasum. Liver diseases. Diseases of mammary gland - division, differential diagnosis. Mastitis - diagnosis, treatment, prevention. High number of somatic cells in milk - solution at farm. Differential diagnosis of circulatory system diseases (congenital hearth defects, endocarditis, myocarditis, myocardial dystrophy, pericarditis, trombophlebitis, anemia, coagulopathy, brady- and tachycardia). Differential diagnosis of respiratory system diseases in adult ruminants (sinusitis, pneumonia, polypnoe, dyspnoe). Differential diagnosis of urinary system diseases (nephritis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, urolithiasis). Interpretation of pathological findings in urine, importance of urine in diagnosis of metabolic disturbances. Differential diagnosis of diseases of skin, subcutis, mucous membranes and eyes (papilomatosis, trichophytosis, dermatitis, ectoparasitoses, absces, phlegmona, decubitus, haematom, keratoconjunctivitis ). Differential diagnosis of infections, carentions and intoxication affecting nervous system. Practical exercises: Visit of the ruminant clinic, patient documentation, registration system of farm animals and used medicaments. Diseases of gastrointestinal tract (forestomach dysfunction). Diseases of gastrointestinal tract (diseases of abomasum and intestine). Liver diseases. Diseases of mammary gland. Other organ disesases in adult cattle. Urinary system diseases, use of urine in diagnosis. Examination and treatment of current patients present in the clinic at each practical exercise.

Learning outcomes
Internal Diseases of Ruminants - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Course description: The goal of the discipline is to teach students diagnostic methods and approaches to serve as the necessary starting point for the study of internal diseases of ruminants. Examination of different nosological categories from the point of etiology, pathogenesis, symptomatology, diagnosis establishment, and differential diagnostics will follow. Students must master these skills using all their knowledge achieved in the course of study of preclinical and fundamental disciplines. The study of metabolism and its defects including a system of preventive diagnostics of production diseases is another integral part of the discipline. Selected infectious diseases, parasitic diseases and clinical toxicology are on the syllabus, too. Attention is paid to differences between diagnostic methods and approaches used for calve, lamb, and kid examination and to important diseases observed in these categories of cattle and small ruminants. Upon conclusion of study of the discipline, the student must be able to diagnose and treat as well as prevent important cattle and small ruminant diseases using contemporary knowledge, the guiding principle being that only a healthy animal with adequate conversion of nutrients having a corresponding economic effect can produce high-quality, and healthy food products of full biological value.
Theoretical knowledge The student is able to explain and describe the diseases of ruminants from farm breeding and animals bred as a hobby. Practical skills The student can carry out a clinical examination of ruminants, determine the clinical symptoms of the disease, perform the necessary therapeutic procedures and operations. Competence The student is able to establish a final diagnosis after examining the animal, establish a prognosis, choose and implement an adequate solution.
