Lectures: 1. Animal protection and welfare definition, importance, content, history. 2. Animal protection at the legal level. Legal regulations. Direct and indirect animal protection. 3. Act on the protection of animals against cruelty purpose, content, basic terms. 4. Protection of farm animals. 5. Protection of animals during transport. 6. Protection of animals during slaughter and killing. 7. Protection of pet animals. Protection of animal species requiring special care. 8. Protection of wild animals. Protection of animals in zoos and circuses. 9. Protection of experimental animals. 10. Animal protection authorities. Administrative delicts. Special measures. 11. Penal code offences in the animal protection. 12. Animal protection within the Council of Europe. 13. Animal protection within the European Union. 14. International conventions for the protection of animals. Exercises: 1. Assessment of animal protection and welfare level. Supervisory procedures. Animal Protection Programme. 2. Animal protection in general case studies simulating cases of compliance and non-compliance with the law (Act on the protection of animals against cruelty five prohibitions). 3. Protection of farm animals case studies (housing, feeding, handling, treatment, breeding, interventions). 4. Protection of farm animals - case studies (moving, loading, transport, unloading). 5. Protection of farm animals - case studies (slaughter and killing). 6. Protection of pet animals - case studies (animal species requiring special care, keeping, killing, abandonment etc.). 7. Protection of wild animals - case studies (capture, hunting, killing, captive breeding, training etc.). 8. Protection of wild animals case studies (game management, hunting, fishing). 9. Protection of wild animals case studies (nature and landscape protection, compensation of damages caused by selected specially protected animals, trade in endangered species). 10. |
The course focuses on the welfare requirements for individual species of animals, their provision, control and supervision of compliance with these conditions, procedures for investigating their violations and sanctions. The practical training aims at the solution of a large number of real or model cases derived from practice and assessment of the level of protection and welfare of animals in practice. The Animal Protection lectures cover legislation of the protection of animals against cruelty, particular legal regulations concerning animal treatment, the protection of individual species of wild animals, protection of animals during import, export and transfer. During the practical training students are taught to recognize cruelty and inadequate treatment of animals. The aim of the Ethology lectures is to teach the scientific basis of animal behaviour in an extent suitable for veterinarians. Practicals are aimed at the basics of quantifying and evaluation of behaviours in companion and food animals, including behaviour problems, their prevention and treatment in swine, ruminants and poultry.
1) theoretical knowledge The student is able to: - describe legislation on the protection of animals against cruelty, control bodies and supervisory procedures, including procedures for detecting violations of legal requirements and sanctions, - describe the conditions for the protection of livestock on farms, during transport and at slaughter, the conditions for the protection of pet animals, the conditions for the protection of experimental animals and the conditions for the protection of wild animals, - describe animal welfare assessment methods and indicators of impaired animal welfare. 2) practical skills The student is able to: - apply regulations governing the protection of farm, pet, experimental and wild animals when assessing specific situations in practice, - identify violations of animal protection legislation against cruelty and propose a solution, - select appropriate indicators and apply them to assess the welfare of individual animal species. 3) competences The student is able to: - work effectively as a team member, - use their knowledge of animal protection and welfare conditions to improve animal welfare and the quality of animal care, - use their expertise to improve the protection and welfare of animals, - identify signs of impaired animal welfare and take appropriate measures, including notification of the competent authorities.
