Lectures: 1. Structure and components of viral particles. Classification of animal viruses. Virus-cell interactions. Molecular basis of viral genome replication and expression 2. Pathogenesis of viral infections at the cell and host level, genetics of viral infections. Bacteriophages 3. Special virology. DNA viruses: Herpesviridae, Circoviridae, Parvoviridae, Anelloviridae 4. Special virology. DNA viruses: Poxviridae, Asfarviridae, Adenoviridae, Polyomaviridae, Papillomaviridae 5. Special virology. RNA viruses: Retroviridae, Caliciviridae, Orthomyxoviridae 6. Special virology. RNA viruses: Paramyxoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Bornaviridae, Reoviridae 7. Special virology. RNA viruses: Flaviviridae, Picornaviridae, Arteriviridae, Coronaviridae, Filoviridae Practical lessons: 1. Principles of good laboratory practice in the microbiological laboratory (occupational safety in an infectious environment), microbiological laboratory and its equipment. Diagnostics in veterinary microbiology (collection, sending and processing of samples intended for virological examination) 2. Methods of virus cultivation, types of cell cultures, cell culture infections. Bacteriophage, phage typing 3. Cell culture changes after infection, virus titration, ID50 determination, alternative methods of virus quantification 4. Microbiological diagnosis of infections caused by members of the Herpesviridae family 5. Microbiological diagnostics of the families Parvoviridae and Circoviridae (quantitative PCR) 6. Microbiological diagnosis of infections caused by members of the Retroviridae family (immunodiffusion test, ELISA, immunoblot) 7. Microbiological diagnostics of the families Orthomyxoviridae and Paramyxoviridae (Distemper, Newcastle disease) 8. Microbiological diagnostics of infections caused by members of the family Rhabdoviridae, (diagnostics of rabies, IFT) 9. Microbiological diagnostics of the families Arteriviridae (PRRS, equine viral arteritis) and Reoviridae (Rotaviruses, Bluetongue) 10. Diagnosis of infections of animals caused by viruses of the family Flaviviridae (CSFV, BVD) 11. Diagnosis of infections in animals caused by viruses of the family Asfarviridae (AMPV) 12. Learning outcomes
|
The fourth semester (3rd year) is devoted to the teaching of virology. In the field of general virology, students will learn to take a sample for virological examination and to identify the viral species by culturing cell cultures, and serological or molecular virological procedures. They will also learn to diagnose important groups of viruses significant in terms of veterinary medicine. The subject of the study is mainly the properties of these viruses (structure, growth, reproduction, genetics) important in terms of their ecology, pathogenicity, virulence and etiology. An integral part of the course is the consolidation of knowledge of the taxonomy and classification of veterinary viruses, including the study of methods for their detection and typing.
1) theoretical knowledge The student is able to describe and explain the etiology and pathogenesis of important virus infections. 2) practical skills The student is able to take samples for bacteriological examination and perform this examination leading to the identification of the virus species, including its possible typing. 3) competences The student is able to determine the identity of the virus species in a clinical sample.

Requirements for granting credits 1. Fulfilment of qualification requirements, i.e. written test in the semester, an oral exam if necessary. 2. Elaboration of a credit virology protocol.
