Course content
Lectures: 1-2. Disease in wildlife populations, natural outbreaks of diseases, the role of vectors and reservoirs, the impact of disease on the survival of endangered species, the impact of biodiversity on diseases in wildlife populations and vice versa 3-4. Diseases of wild amphibians - infectious and non-infectious diseases, the global decline of amphibians, chytridiomycosis, problems in rescue programs 5-6. Diseases of wild reptiles - impacts of pollution, endocrine disruptors, infectious and non-infectious diseases, veterinary problems in translocations of endangered species 7-8. Diseases of wild birds - specifics of bird diseases, intoxication, infections, zoonoses 9-10. Diseases of wild mammals - the problem of outbreaks of dangerous diseases in populations of wild mammals, infectious and non-infectious diseases, zoonoses 11. Selected diseases and ectoparasites of wild birds in our country and abroad 12-13. Analysis of the current situation and the most current diseases of wild animals Practical lessons: Block field practical course 1-2. Introduction to non-infectious diseases of wild animals. Introduction to the issue of infectious diseases of wild animals 3-10. Capture and examination of wild birds. Own capture, manipulation and immobilization, methodology of data collection, collection of biological material, capture of ectoparasites, processing of acquired data and their importance 11-12. Principles of handling amphibians, demonstration of skin smears 13-14. Collection of ticks by flagging. Records keeping 15-16. Most common species of wild micromammals in the Czech Republic. Species diagnosis 17-24. Wild rodents and their importance in the spreading of selected diseases of wild animals. Preparation of spring traps, setting traps, species determination and examination of caught rodents, autopsy with material collection 25-26. Awarding of credit

Learning outcomes
To acquaint students with the issue of wildlife diseases, their importance, and the impact on populations of wild species, especially endangered species. Emphasis is placed on the impact of diseases on biodiversity and, conversely, the impact of biodiversity on morbidity in wildlife populations. Clarifying the link between wildlife populations, biodiversity and the existence of emergent diseases. Introduction to the most important diseases of wild amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Theoretical knowledge The student is able to: - describe the impact of wildlife diseases on biodiversity and, conversely, the impact of biodiversity on morbidity in wildlife populations, - define the main infectious and non-infectious causes of diseases in selected groups of wild animals, - define basic concepts, understand the importance of diseases of wild species and their role in the formation and maintenance of outbreaks of dangerous diseases, including their impact on populations of domestic animals and humans, - analyse the health situation of the individual and in the population of wild animals - distinguish the main reservoir species of rodents. Practical skills The student is able to: - implement basic forms of the capture of ticks, small birds, mammals and amphibians, - handle small birds and amphibians carefully, including short-term fixation, - perform parasitological necropsy of rodents, including the sampling of parasites and tissues for further analysis. Competences The student is able to: - assess the effects of various wildlife diseases on the epidemiological situation in the region, is able to participate in the development of preventive measures, - propose the management of the most important infectious and non-infectious diseases in wild animal populations, - fully participate in the management of protected species in terms of protecting the health of these animals and maintaining a healthy ecosystem, - carry out veterinary supervision of translocations of wild animals, rescue centres as well as in-situ/ex-situ conservation projects.

Oral exam

Credit requirements: - participation at practical lessons, absence has to be excused, rescheduling is only possible at a time and in a manner determined by the teacher - preparation and presentation of protocols from practical lessons, these must be submitted no later than by the credit week in which the student presents them - passing a credit test Exam requirements: - theoretical knowledge acquired during practical lessons and theoretical teaching
